PU vacuum casting

Polyurethane vacuum casting is a proven, economical process for producing plastic prototypes with complex geometries. Under vacuum, we cast two-component PU resins into a silicone mould, where they cure through a chemical reaction. Casting in a vacuum chamber reduces the risk of porosity to a minimum. Inserts such as threaded bushings can easily be cast in. For example, we produce transparent gearbox housings that we then machine – they work like a real housing while giving a clear view of the inner workings.

We can also produce two-component mouldings (hard and soft component). If our manufacturing tolerances are not sufficient for a particular application, we machine the casting to meet your requirements.
Almost all materials can be coloured to your wishes. Different surface textures and surface finishes – such as painting or vacuum metallisation – can also be realised according to your requirements.

Choice of material

Choosing the right material is crucial for the success of your project, and we are happy to advise you. We offer a range of casting resins with series-like properties:

  • transparent/translucent casting resins
  • elastomers in various Shore hardnesses
  • high-strength resins with or without glass filling
  • temperature-resistant casting resins
  • self-extinguishing resins (UL 94)

Advantages over injection moulding

Vacuum casting lets us produce high-quality plastic prototypes economically. Compared with injection moulding, it offers decisive advantages for prototypes and small series:

  • significantly lower tooling costs
  • no sink marks where material accumulates at junctions
  • undercuts can be reproduced without difficulty.
